2020 NHL Mock Draft: 2 Rounds
April 8, New Jersey. Alexander Holtz. Right Wing RW. January 23, Cole Perfetti. Saginaw OHL. January 1, Without further ado, here is a recap of the top 10 from mock 4. For a non-Finnish comparable, Lundell also reminds some scouts of Sean Couturier based on his two-way prowess and evolving offensive tools that could elevate Lundell into a top-line role for the Wild. That upside is debatable, but Lundell has a high floor as a middle-six centre and is arguably the second-most NHL-ready prospect in this draft class — behind only Lafreniere but ahead of Byfield and Stutzle, among others.
Still, the smart play would be to leave Lundell in Finland for another year to grow his offensive game despite the fact he appears more polished than Kaapo Kakko was this season or Jesperi Kotkaniemi the year before as fellow Finns who were taken in the top three. Zary is somewhat similar in his playing style and should be good for plus points throughout his prime. Little is signed for four more seasons throughbut there is uncertainty surrounding his return for health reasons and Cody Eakin was acquired to plug that hole in the present, so Zary could seize an opportunity with the Jets in the coming years.
Zary is an older prospect for this draft class and might be able to make the jump following next season, providing he continues to round out his overall game. This time, Mysak is their primary target at 13th as a Czech wingman for Filip Chytil. If the Rangers really want Mysak, they probably need to take him here.
Schneider might be deemed more of a need since he is right-handed and that is an organizational weakness in terms of the prospect pool.
2020 NHL Draft Notes
Schneider is also considered closer to NHL ready than Guhle and could be slotting behind Aaron Ekblad within a couple years whereas Guhle will likely take a few to develop into a top-four role. Schneider would be what the Panthers thought they were getting in Mark Pysyk, as more of a shutdown type and a physical presence with a good amount of meanness to his game.
The Blue Jackets have endured all kinds of injury issues in recent years, so they might be reluctant to take a chance on Lapierre with his concussion concerns, but there are now reports his neck was more so the problem. Regardless, Lapierre missed most of his draft year after starring at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup last summer and getting labelled as a top talent for Dillon Dube and Matthew Phillips are also local products drafted by the Flames. That trio would be lustworthy as in wickedly potent and wildly fun to watch, with Gunler being one of the best pure snipers in this draft class.
Gunler may be a boom-or-bust prospect but getting him here would be another massive boon for the Canucks. He is absolutely in the mix for the top 31 and Nashville could be the team to take him.
Rees is a relentless catalyst — with a high-octane motor, always in fifth gear — but Perreault is the more gifted scorer between them, picking his spots and possessing a better shot. Perreault has the higher ceiling and should be a first-rounder, with Carolina being among his potential suitors. Edmonton has been drafting well out of the OHL in recent years — particularly during the Peter Chiarelli era — so Foerster could be a prime target, along with Jack Quinn from mock 2.
Foerster is a shoot-first winger, which is exactly what Edmonton will be wanting here.
Landing both Lafreniere and Byfield in the lottery would be amazing enough, but having Askarov land in their lap is truly the cherry on top. That would be the epitome of having their cake and eating it too, with those three selections surely bailing out Eugene Melnyk and restoring the Senators to prominence.Welcome to NHL. Vitajte na NHL. The final order will be set after the Stanley Cup Final. The Ottawa Senators are the only team that currently has two selections in the first round. Lepage -- Lafreniere : If there was any debate as to whether he was going to be the first pick of the NHL Draft, he laid to rest any doubts by soaring past the competition at the WJC.
Kimelman -- Quinton Byfield, C, Sudbury OHL : The Devils have good, young talent through the middle with Hischier and Jack Hughes but adding a player with Byfield's sizeand ability to take over a game with his strength and skill will go a long way toward boosting their rebuilding effort. Stuetzle has outstanding speed, puck handling, vision and competitiveness, plus some swagger to his game. He had five assists and averaged in ice time in five games for Germany at the WJC.
Lepage -- Byfield : He may be one of the youngest players in the Draft class -- he turned 17 on Aug. He offers an excellent blend of speed, skill and strength. Morreale -- Byfield : The left-shot center is a powerful skater with breakaway speed and an exceptional skill set.
Lepage -- Stuetzle : He has an extremely smooth skating stride and an impressive vision of the game. He is following in the footsteps of countryman Leon Draisaitlwho was selected by the Edmonton Oilers with the No. Kimelman -- Jamie Drysdale, D, Erie OHL : The Ducks have done a nice job selecting young forwards the past few seasons, and now they can add the best defenseman available.
The year-old right-handed shotis an outstanding skater in all directions with the ability to lead the rush, and has top-end offensive skills once his team sets up in the zone, which he demonstrated with Canada at the WJC. His skating also makes him an outstanding 1-on-1 defender. Lepage -- Raymond : Raymond has great hands and can create magic in the offensive zone at any moment.
He's also relied on to kill penalties, which speaks volumes about his versatility. Kimelman -- Stuetzle : The year-old already is a star on one of the best teams in Germany's pro league. Stuetzle is a dynamic skater with great vision who can find open players anywhere in the offensive zone. Morreale -- Alexander Holtz, RW, Djurgarden SWE : A smart right-handed shotwith good on-ice-vision, technical skills and a tremendous shot who can see openings and set up teammates.
2020 NHL Draft Notes
Lepage -- Drysdale : Known first and foremost as an offensive defenseman, Drysdale also can take on top defensive assignments without issue, even while competing at the highest level, which he proved as a year-old with Canada at the WJC. Kimelman -- Holtz : The year-old has one of the best shots in the Draft class, with the ability to get it off from anywhere at any time.
When healthy he is tough to knock off his skates, can protect the puck extremely well and is able to find teammates in traffic. Lepage -- Holtz : He certainly knows how to put the puck in the back of the net.
Holtz is a sniper who knows how to blend in and get open. Paired with a playmaker, he can wreak havoc. The year-old has great size, is technically sound but quick and athletic enough to make any kind of save.Welcome to NHL. Vitajte na NHL. Willkommen auf NHL. Bienvenido a NHL.
After that, however, their opinions differ greatly. The NHL Draft was postponed from its initial date, Junedue to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. A new date has yet to be announced. The order used for this mock draft is based on the standings when the NHL season paused March The Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks each currently have two first-round selections. The pick would go to Ottawa as long as it's not in the top three.
The New Jersey Devils also could have three first-round picks depending on certain conditions. The Lightning previously had acquired the pick from the Canucks as part of the trade for forward J. The New York Rangers Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild Pittsburgh Penguins also have acquired conditional first-round picks that could change hands based on the final standings.
That makes him the top talent in the draft and should allow him to step into a significant NHL role next season. But as skilled and talented as Lafreniere is, what makes him even more impressive is his relentlessness and willingness to play a hard game and finish checks.
As good as Byfield is now, he still can add strength and go from outstanding to elite.
NHL Mock Draft 2020: Complete Round 1 Pick Predictions for Every Team
Morreale -- Quinton Byfield: The big left-shot center is a powerful skater with breakaway speed and an exceptional skill set. He led Sudbury with 82 points 32 goals, 50 assists in 45 OHL games. He carried that momentum to his season in Deutsche Eishockey Liga, Germany's top pro league. He had 34 points seven goals, 27 assists in 41 games and won the league's rookie of the year award.
Kimelman -- Tim Stuetzle: Stuetzle's mature game allowed him to earn a significant role on the top team in the German league as a teenager. That experience against more developed competition should help him when he makes the jump to the NHL. Thepound right-hand shot is capable of driving play with his skating and elite hockey sense. Lepage -- Jamie Drysdale: Ottawa has built up its prospect base with forwards over the past few years; now the Senators can shore up their depth on defense by selecting the best player at his position in this class.
Rossi led all CHL players with points 39 goals, 81 assists in 56 games, willingly goes to the net to produce offense and his high hockey IQ makes him a solid two-way player who can kill penalties. Morreale -- Tim Stuetzle: A hard-working left-shot forward capable of playing in all situations with speed, great vision and swagger.
Lepage -- Quinton Byfield: He won't turn 18 until Aug. But he's also one of the largest and most complete. He offers an excellent mix of speed, skill and physicality that would mesh well with the Kings' style of play. Kimelman -- Jamie Drysdale: The Ducks have invested heavily in forwards in recent drafts, and a chance to add the best defenseman in this year's class should be too hard to pass up. Drysdale is a complete player, able to skate the puck out of his zone and lead the breakout or smartly and accurately pass the puck up the ice.
He always keeps a good gap and uses his stick and body positioning in the defensive zone to keep opponents to the outside. It's March, the NHL is suspended due to coronavirus concerns and it's unclear what will happen next. That also leaves some uncertainty surrounding this year's draft, which is set to take place June in Montreal. There's no date set for the NHL draft lottery, but that will have the biggest impact on the draft prior to the event as teams find out where they'll pick and which players they could land.
Here's a mock for how the first round of the draft could unfold, followed by a closer look at the likely first three players to be selected this year. Lafreniere is poised to join elite company as this year's No. Plus, both went on to have stellar careers. It's clear Lafreniere is the best player available in this year's draft class and will get picked by whichever team ends up with the No.
In 52 games for Rimouski this season, he's tallied points on 35 goals and 77 assists. At the World Junior Championship earlier this year, the year-old had four goals and six assists while leading Canada to the gold medal and winning the MVP Award at the event.
While it's uncertain which team uses the top pick on Lafreniere, he should go on to have NHL success. Stutzle is a talented forward who also makes the players on the ice around him better. He demonstrated that throughout the season, as 27 of his 34 points came on assists over his 41 games for Adler Mannheim. At the World Junior Championship, the year-old tallied five assists in five games for Germany. That's the type of player that he's been throughout his career for different teams, as he typically tallies more assists than goals while finding ways to power an offense.
Stutzle is likely to be one of the first names off the board in the draft as he's proved to be the best offensive player to come from Germany in this year's class. Byfield put himself on the map with a great season for Sudbury in the campaign, tallying 61 points 29 goals, 32 assists in 64 games.
He then went out and was even better this season. In 45 games, the year-old had 32 goals and 50 assists, bettering each of his totals from last year.
And although he had a quiet showing at the World Junior Championship one assist in seven games for Canadahe made up for it by playing the way he did in the OHL. A 6-foot-4 center, Byfield possesses a lot of skills that makes him difficult for defenders to try to contain. The NHL Season is underway.
